Enter end of Summer: Surfing

Just recently, my best friend, his brother-in-law, and I went surfing for my friend’s 25th Birthday; and lemme tell ya, it was cowabunga-rific! We hung ten for sure…all at 7th street surf shop in Ocean City, New Jersey. You want to know the best part about their shop, besides laid back and friendly surfing instructors? Group lessons are only approximately $35.oo per person! That’s a score, don’t you think? I do! Our surfing trio headed out at about a quarter after 7 in the a.m. down the parkway, over the bridge, and on our way to about two hours of catching some serious wave.  When we arrived, we had to sign waivers (for safety purposes, of course), and then the group got sized for wet suits.  WARNING: If you’re a well-endowed man or a man in general, I suggest wearing something lightweight and skimpy underneath your wet suit…it’ll be SUPER uncomfortable otherwise…trust me! Surprised Once we were suited up, we headed to the first part of our lesson. The surfers in training all lined their boards up on the sand in angst…the lesson was about the begin. The surfing lesson began on the beach because we needed to be taught the proper way to get onto our surf boards, and also get some pointers while we were in the ocean all by our lonesome. The instructors made us all try paddling, lifting our heads up with our arms, and jumping into a perfect surf position several times before we hit the water. Once that was complete (about 30 minutes of beach instruction), the instructors broke the group up into teams.  There were about three people per team and the real fun began! (Not to mention nerves were about to fly like nobody’s business!) Our instuctor was Rob, and he was def laid back! He took us out one by one into the water and literally positioned us into perfect waves. He would position us into an incoming wave, push us out a little bit, tell us to when to paddle and when to try our hand at getting up onto the board. Everyone got 4 tries total with the instructor in a rotating manner. Once everyone had rotated twice, we all met as a group once again and gave ourselves a round of applause.  It was quite a moment, if I do say so myself. After that, we had 30 minutes of free time to catch as many waves as possible without the instructors. We were given more guidelines, and off we went. I won’t say that surfing is as easy at it looks or sounds, but I will say that the surfing trio had an absolute blast! Once again, 7th street surf shop’s staff was super friendly, the lessons were NOT over-priced, and it’s an all around fun, laid back time. I highly suggest heading for a surfing lesson near you before the season is really over or definitely plan a trip next summer! Surf’s up!
